Quartz

A quartz watch is electronic and uses an oscillating quartz crystal to regulate its timing. Power for the movement comes from an electric battery.

A quartz crystal is used due to its chemical structure, since it is composed of silica atoms and possesses piezoelectric properties which means it can emit vibrations at precise time intervals when charged with electricity. A sophisticated quartz movement in contrast to a mechanical one hardly deviates in accuracy typically maintaining an accuracy of 0.3 seconds a month while a high level mechanical one typically varies between 6 and 10 seconds per month.
