Oscillator

The oscillator is used in watch mechanisms to regulate the movement. By oscillating perfectly with a regular to-and-fro motion between two extreme points it allows time to be equally divided into parts.

In mechanical watches this involves the balance spring and the pendulum in clocks.

While in electronic watches the oscillator is a quartz crystal.
