Burnishing

This is a process used primarily for polishing pivots using a burnisher. This is a hardened steel tool in which the surface used for polishing is ground on an emery stone to produce fine scratches which run across the tool. Some burnishers are produced in the form of a grinding wheel and some are formed from sapphire.

The burnisher wears away the rough unfinished surface of the item being polished by removing up to 0.02mm of the surface material.
