Summer Selection Featuring JeanRichard

Summer Selection Featuring JeanRichard

by Tom Mulraney

For most people summer time is the best time of the year. Sure you get the occasional freak that says they prefer cold weather but for the rest of us nothing beats lazing around on a warm summer day not really doing much in particular other than relaxing and admiring the view, whatever it may be – hopefully a beach or a poolside populated with beautiful people.

The warmer weather also gives us gentleman an opportunity to dress down a little. Ties and jackets are banished from the weekly work wardrobe and just about anything goes on the weekends, depending on the setting of course. After all showing up at your best friend’s wedding in shorts and a singlet may seem like a good idea at the time (especially if it is one of those beach weddings that are somehow still in en vogue even though sand gets everywhere) but believe me you don’t want to be the reason why the bride has to be physically restrained on her special day! I digress however and so back to the topic at hand.

As we’ve already covered, summer is the time to mix up your wardrobe a little and have some fun. As soon as the mercury starts rising the first thing you think about is getting your hands on some cool shorts and t-shirts and maybe even a new pair of Italian made loafers. Buy why limit yourself to just that? Summer is also a great time to freshen up your wrist game and maybe even add in some colour for those aforementioned lazy days by the pool.

To get the ball rolling we have selected four great watch options, courtesy of JeanRichard, for your consideration. Although similar in many ways, not least of which is that they all tell the time, each watch in the line-up has its own distinct style, meaning you could easily pick one or several to be your constant companion this summer. Whatever you choose, the important thing is to remember to have fun!

JeanRichard – The Brand

Before we dive headlong into the watches it’s probably worthwhile providing a little background on JeanRichard for those who are not that familiar the brand. Owned by the Sowind Group, which in turn is majority-owned by Kering (owner of brands such as Gucci, Balenciaga, Boucheron, etc.) JeanRichard is the younger stable-mate of another famous Swiss watch brand; Girard-Perregaux.

Named after a pioneering watchmaker from the 17th century – Daniel JeanRichard – the brand has experienced somewhat of a resurgence over the last decade or so, which may or may not have something to do with Kering first getting involved back in 2008. Whatever the reason the brand has really streamlined its collections over the last few years, giving JeanRichard a much clearer identity and winning over a whole new legion of fans in the process. A renewed focus on quality as well as the use of in-house movements has also done wonders, not to mention the odd strategic partnership here and there.

Whatever the reason(s) the end result is a collection of cool watches perfectly suited to summer. Here are four of our favourites:

JeanRichard Terrascope White Matte Dial

The name of the first watch in our selection is somewhat misleading. Whilst it certainly does have a white matte dial, it is easily the most colourful pick in our line-up today. What makes this particular model even more interesting though is the material used for cushion-shaped, 44mm case; aluminium. Apparently JeanRichard experimented with other metals but only aluminium really made the bright blue, red and green color scheme ‘pop’ the way they wanted it to.

The aforementioned matte white dial meanwhile contrasts beautifully with the applied blue PVD-coated indexes, each of which features an additional orange luminescent dot that matches the orange luminescent material inside the blue PVD-coated hands. Paired with a blue rubber strap and water resistant to 100m, this is the perfect watch for those looking to turn heads this summer down at the beach.

JeanRichard Aeroscope Green Grained Dial

Of course if you’re the type who prefers to keep things a little more low-key and natural looking, than perhaps this Aeroscope Green Grained Dial will be more to your liking. Also presented in a 44mm cushion-shaped case, this watch is made from sandblasted black DLC-coated titanium and features a matching black DLC-coated titanium bezel. Paired with a black rubber strap it’s a bit more of a sleeper on the wrist, the green grained dial making it the perfect companion for hikes through tropical rainforests and other nature-oriented adventures. Alternatively you can just do what I do and wear it while having a nap in the sun in a city park.

JeanRichard Terrascope White Stamped Dial

The Terrascope White Stamped Dial is possibly the most ‘summery’ of all the summer watches we have here for you today. The model we photographed was on a black strap however it also comes with the option of a white strap, which I actually prefer. The all-white-everything look is definitely in this summer and looks fresh and clean on the wrist. This model, also in the 44mm Terrascope case, has the added feature of a stamped dial, giving the watch just that extra bit of flavour and making it slightly less plain on the wrist.

JeanRichard Aeroscope Black Dial

As is always the case, I have saved the best for last, at least in my opinion. The Aeroscope Black Dial is a seriously cool watch, offering full chronograph functionality in a wonderfully eye-catching fashion. Presented in a 44mm polished and vertically satin-finished titanium and black DLC-coated titanium case with a matching black DLC-coated titanium bezel that has been engraved and filled with orange painting, it stands out on the wrist for all the right reasons.

The black dial is also vertically satin-finished and features black circular satin-finished counters with transferred Arabic numerals and indexes in contrasting orange luminescent material. The black skeletonized hands have also been treated with the same luminescent material which contrasts nicely against the white varnished central seconds hand. Meanwhile pushers made from a carbon fiber composite are responsible for starting, stopping and resetting the chronograph. The model we photograph came fitted on a matching rubber orange strap – which I think looks great – however the watch is also available with a more subdued black Barenia® calfskin strap with contrast orange stitching.
